Torus models for obscuration in type 2 AGN

چکیده
We discuss a clumpy model of obscuring dusty tori around AGN. Cloudcloud collisions lead to an effective viscosity and a geometrically thick accretion disk, which has the required properties of a torus. Accretion in the combined gravitational potential of central black hole and stellar cluster generates free energy, which is dissipated in collisions, and maintains the thickness of the torus. A quantitative treatment for the torus in the prototypical Seyfert 2 nucleus of NGC 1068 together with a radiative transfer calculation for NIR re-emission from the torus is presented.

AGN dust tori at low and high luminosities
A cornerstone of AGN unification schemes is the presence of an optically and geometrically thick dust torus. It provides the obscuration to explain the difference between type 1 and type 2 AGN. We investigate the influence of the dust distribution on the Eddington limit of the torus. For smooth dust distributions, the Eddingtion limit on the dust alone is 5 orders of magnitudes below the limit ...
متن کاملUnification Issues and the AGN Torus
Observations give strong support for the unification scheme of active galactic nuclei. Clumpiness of the toroidal obscuration is crucial for explaining the IR observations and has significance consequences for AGN classification: type 1 and type 2 viewing is an angle-dependent probability, not an absolute property. The broad line region (BLR) and the dusty torus are, respectively, the inner and...

As a result of deep hard X-ray observations by Chandra and XMM-Newton a significant fraction of the cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) has been resolved into individual sources. These objects are almost all active galactic nuclei (AGN) and optical followup observations find that they are mostly obscured Type 2 AGN, have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (i.e., L X ∼ 10 43−44 ergs s −1), and peak in r...
